So back in 2018 I was asked to join a wedding & events band called The Chromantics - made up of some of my pals from the Hofstra music scene. Not ONLY my pals but we're talking some of the cream of the crop musicians to come out of the department in the early 2010s (yes, we're old). These people can PLAY! Lead guitar, keys, bass, horns, triangle, sound machines - it's all there and it's all beautiful. Fronting the band, my dear friend Erin Willett of NBC's THE VOICE (heard of it?) who is a proven force of nature, and joining me in the new lineup was the indomitable PIP - another NBC's THE VOICE alum with a falsetto that can blow the roof off the Empire State Building. I have to say that in lock step, the three of us together can make some pop cover MAGIC happen!
I don't know about you but it's my personal opinion that nothing sounds better than a delicious 3-part harmony (I could be biased here). I was raised on this idea by my mother and her mother before her, so it runs pretty deep - but I mean, have you seen this? Or this? When you get a good blend of vox going, it is NOT something to take for granted.
The Chromantics have played some pretty epic wedding gigs in the past two years and it's honestly the most fun I've had playing music quite possibly ever! They really undersell wedding bands in the public conscience - most people (and movies and TV shows) assume they all suck. If you've ever seen Soul Session you know this is a complete myth (I've had the pleasure and privilege of joining some of these Edu-tainment sessions as an honorary member of the family myself) - and I say this as both a performer and a guest of many weddings past: a good wedding band has the ability to take what's already a joyous occasion into the literal stratosphere. It's a HUGE responsibility, people!
All of this really to say that we had some great gigs lined up this spring and summer, but nature had some other plans for us. The Chromantics FOMO right now during this terrible pandemic is VERY strong - we cannot wait to get back out there again. Here's a very special highlight from our last wedding gig when I had the pleasure of singing Brandi Carlile's "The Story" for Matty and Kayla's First Dance in September of last year!
